Pause and consider

A reading note

A qualification belongs beside the claim it changes. When making a short note from a longer passage, keep words expressing uncertainty or conditions attached to the relevant sentence. If the passage contains several claims, identify which the qualification concerns rather than spreading it across everything or dropping it entirely. Read your note back with the qualification removed: if the meaning becomes stronger or broader, those words are doing necessary work. A concise note should preserve that work, even when background detail is shortened. Otherwise, your later question may begin from a claim the passage did not make.

Questions to carry forward

  • Which specific claim does this qualification narrow or make conditional?
  • Would removing these words make my note stronger than the passage I read?
  • Can I shorten the background while preserving the condition that gives the claim its scope?
