Pause and consider

A reading note

The wording of a question can ask someone to accept a premise before answering. A request to explain why something happened already treats its occurrence as settled. Pause before following that invitation. Identify what the question assumes, then decide whether that assumption belongs among the points you want examined. If it does, ask about the premise before asking for its explanation. This is a way to make the conversation fairer, not to reject an explanation in advance. The answer can then address an openly stated question rather than inherit an unnoticed commitment.

Questions to carry forward

  • What does this question ask the responder to accept before giving an answer?
  • Should that assumed premise be examined as part of the discussion?
  • How could I phrase the question without treating the disputed point as settled?
