Pause and consider

A reading note

Keep a passage and your interpretation distinguishable when taking notes. You can record the writer's wording, then separately state what you think it means and why. If your interpretation adds a connection that the passage does not state, make that connection visible as your reasoning. This is useful even when you agree with the writer. Later, you can check whether a disagreement concerns the original claim or your added step. A question built from those separate parts is easier to discuss because another reader can see where the text ends and your interpretation begins.

Questions to carry forward

  • Which words in my note belong to the passage, and which express my interpretation?
  • Have I added a connection that should be examined rather than attributed to the writer?
  • Would another reader locate the same disagreement after seeing those parts separately?
